5 Signs Your Werribee Home Needs a Switchboard Upgrade
Ceramic fuses, no RCDs, warm switchboard, fuses blowing — five clear signs it's time to upgrade your switchboard in Werribee or Wyndham.
A switchboard is the heart of your home's electrical system. When it's old, undersized or missing safety devices, the consequences range from nuisance trips to fire risk. Here's what to look for.
1. Ceramic fuses
Those round porcelain fuses with the wire inside? They were standard in Werribee through the 70s and 80s. They blow slowly, can't be reset easily, and don't offer RCD protection. A modern switchboard upgrade swaps them for RCBOs that trip in milliseconds.
2. No safety switches
Current AS/NZS 3000 Wiring Rules require RCDs on every final sub-circuit. If your board only has a single RCD covering power points (and none on lights, oven or aircon), you're well behind today's standard.
3. Switchboard is warm or buzzing
Heat means resistance, which means a loose or failing connection. Stop using the board and book a fault find.
4. Fuses or breakers blowing regularly
Especially in summer when split systems are running. Usually means the board can't handle modern loads.
5. You're planning solar, EV charging, or an extension
All three need clear busbar space, RCBO protection and often a board upgrade before they can be installed compliantly. Get it done once, properly, by a licensed local electrician across Werribee, Hoppers Crossing and Wyndham.
